• LFG COMMAND SYSTEMS’ CEO Alex Griffin, a Gwinnett County, Georgia firefighter, won second place in the software design competition at the Random Hacks of Kindness (RHOK) event in June. LFG Command Systems was tasked to pick a problem from the RHOK challenge list or come up with one of its own. The problem it addressed was to create a software system that will send quick text alerts with lifesaving instructions before and during a disaster. It named the application Disaster Alert. The software enables a person living in an area that is not experiencing a disaster (but who has relatives or friends who are) to send an alert to their cell phones. If the receiver of the alert is within the telecom network coverage area, the system will activate his or her phone with an attention-getting notification. When the receiver views it, a map of the disaster location they are in will also be displayed. This information will be reflected on a Web site so that first responders will know the receiver’s last known location if they must conduct a search to find the person.
Student Reflections:
"The hose had small knobs that can be turned to change the pressure, shape, and even direction of the water."~Abdishakur, 9th grade
"Mr. Alex, the male black fire fighter, was also an entrepreneur. He created a computerized system to keep track of fire fighters in an event, instead of relying on a white board. He thought every fire station in the country would want it, but he didn't realize how much marketing he would have to do! Now other emergency personal, including the military, contact him about his system." ~Coach Vector
"The session that we went through with the firefighters was a very helpful insight on how to keep safe, and on what it takes to join the business." ~Harun Olayiwala, 10th grade
"Finally, I wanted to touch on the diversity in fire fighting. The firefighters that came to visit us were extremely different from one another. From a white women who has a child to a young Asian recruit and even a larger black man. This just goes to show that anyone can be a firefighter and help people. No matter who you are or where you come from you can be a firefighter." ~Momen Yacoub, 12th grade
"Firefighters hold zero bias during rescues. Adults and children are seen as equals when it comes to targets of interest."~Mohamed Mohamed, 10th grade
"I noticed how excited we were about the Fire Team coming, since that last time we ever had an experience like this if there ever was one was in pre-K or Kindergarten. Therefore, I believe the High School students should be more involved with the local fire fighting team. We can retain more information and get good insights about fire and what it's all about!"~Zila Maksumic, 9th grade
