AFA Vectors prioritize safety in everything we do. We take time to learn about safety, bring in experts to advise us, and implement safety procedures. Regarding safety, EVERYONE is responsible.
Prior to kickoff day, we watched various safety videos, discussed safety issues we notice in various scenarios, took a safety test, and were required to sign documentation showing our responsibility to safety being a priority. We also used Sign-up Genius to ask donations for safety equipment- gloves, glasses, masks, etc. However, we didn't stop there. On kickoff day, September 23rd, 2017, many of us went to a workshop to learn about safety in the workshop. We learned about specific measures that we can take to ensure safety. Some of the team members went to the safety and tools class which helped guide the rest of the rookie team. On October 10th, 2017, AFA Vector team member, Aya Haddad, brought her father, Mr. Haddad, to teach us about safety. We learned about the different tools and their purposes. We also learned about how to mount wood to make safe cuts, and he helped us build a wedge to safely work with PVC pipe. On October 16, Mr. Shahid from Smetalworks came in to teach us how to work with metal. Not only did he teach us, but he continued to come as needed to monitor us when working with metal. However, we didn't stop there. On October 17th, Mr. Simon, from Home Depot 1775, came in to guide us as we made first cuts on wood. Our coach first met him when she was trying to find safer tools for us to work with at HomeDepot. He offered to come to train and monitor our rookie team as needed. Through the end of October, Mr. Bakhtiyor Makhmudov, trained us in using a table saw and a blowtorch to work with that plexi glass and other plastics. |
